University of Helsinki, Tvärminne Zoological Station

Contact: Joanna Norkko
Description

Tvärminne Zoological Station (TZS) of University of Helsinki is the site of the Tvärminne Mesocosm Facility (TMF) located by the brackish Baltic Sea, at the entrance to the Gulf of Finland. Established in 1902, TZS has a long history of experimental and field studies in marine biology and related areas. TZS is fully operational all year around. In addition to the station’s own research teams, TZS is annually visited by ca. 250 scientists from all over the world. TZS is part of the marine research infrastructure FINMARI (http://www.finmari-infrastructure.fi/), which is coordinated by SYKE, and has been appointed to the Finnish roadmap for RIs. TZS coordinates the Finnish node of EMBRC (http://www.embrc.eu) with an associated partnership.

Role In Project

Joanna Norkko (f, PhD 2005). Research coordinator and acting director. Aquatic ecologist with highly international research profile, focusing especially on coastal ecosystems and the effects of eutrophication and climate change on the functioning of key coastal habitats. Co-leader of national marine RI consortium FINMARI. Coordinates partnership of TZS in several ongoing international research consortia. Google Scholar statistics: > 40 papers, 1960 citations, h-index 23.

Project role AQUACOSM: Task leader WP6.15 and contributor to WP9.2.

Project role AQUACOSM-plus: Co-Leader in WP8.1: Demonstration to tackle Grand Challenges through mobilised mesocosm experimentation. Contributor WP7, WP8

Aleksandra M. Lewandowska (f, PhD 2011 in plankton ecology). Assistant Professor in marine functional biodiversity at TZS, focusing on the impact of climate change on species interactions in pelagic ecosystems. More than 10 years of experience in mesocosm research, including AQUASHIFT (Priority Programme of the German Research Foundation) and MESOAQUA (EU Network of leading mesocosm facilities). ISI WoS statistics: 21 papers (including 14 on mesocosm experiments), 461 citations, h-index 13.

Project role AQUACOSM: Contributor to WP6.15 and WP9.2.

Project role AQUACOSM-plus: Task Leader in WP9.24. Provision of TA to UH-TMF, Contributor WP6, WP7, WP8
